As a leader, entrepreneur, or high performer, you’re used to carrying a lot. Making decisions, holding others, and keeping it all together.
But real healing doesn’t always happen through control or analysis.
Sometimes, it begins when you feel safe enough to soften.
When you stop performing and start listening.
MDMA-assisted therapy offers a different kind of entry point—not through the mind, but through the heart.
It’s a space where emotional honesty becomes strength, where relational wounds can be met with compassion, and where the armour you’ve worn for years can finally begin to come off.
Not because you’ve failed.
But because you’re ready to lead from a deeper, more authentic place.
Unlike classic psychedelics that often dissolve the ego or expand awareness, MDMA offers something different: a felt sense of safety, compassion, and emotional clarity. It quiets the inner critic, so the real conversation can begin—within yourself or with someone you love.
In my work with high performers, entrepreneurs, and couples navigating disconnect or crisis, MDMA has become one of the most powerful tools for emotional healing. It allows what’s unspoken to be voiced. What’s stuck to move. What’s guarded to open.
In this article, we’ll explore how MDMA-assisted therapy can support your journey—whether you’re healing old wounds, seeking reconnection in your relationship, or simply longing to feel more emotionally present.
We’ll cover what MDMA therapy actually looks like in Portugal, how it supports couples and individuals differently, and how to know if it’s the right next step for you.
Let’s begin.
MDMA-assisted therapy is a powerful healing modality that combines the heart-opening, fear-reducing effects of MDMA with skilled therapeutic support. Originally explored in the 1970s and 80s for its potential in trauma and relationship therapy, MDMA has seen a global resurgence as research confirms its effectiveness, particularly for PTSD, depression, and relational healing.
MDMA works differently from classic psychedelics like psilocybin or LSD. Rather than producing vivid visions or altered states of consciousness, MDMA amplifies feelings of empathy, trust, and emotional clarity. It increases serotonin and oxytocin, calms the amygdala (the brain’s fear centre), and enhances communication between different parts of the brain, creating a state where deep emotional work becomes safe and thereby possible.
In Portugal, MDMA is decriminalised for personal use, though it is not yet legalised for clinical therapy. However, within the growing space of harm-reduction and private therapeutic practice, some facilitators (myself included) offer MDMA-assisted sessions in carefully held, trauma-informed settings.
This means sessions take place in a private, supportive environment—often with extensive preparation and integration—and are guided with deep care for your emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.
Whether you’re working with childhood trauma, burnout, disconnection, or seeking repair in a relationship, MDMA can be a profound ally. But as with any medicine, the results are not about the substance alone—they’re about the relationship, the intention, and the container.
Emotional Healing Through MDMA
MDMA doesn’t fix you—it helps you embrace ALL of you with kindness, patience, and compassion.
For many high achievers, the default strategy has been to cope, perform, and push through. But beneath the surface, unresolved grief, unmet needs, or long-suppressed emotions often remain. MDMA gently opens the door to those inner places, without overwhelm or re-traumatisation.
In an MDMA-assisted session, emotional healing happens not by digging into pain, but by creating the conditions for the heart to speak. You may reconnect with a younger part of yourself, express truths you’ve never said aloud, or see a complicated relationship through new eyes.
Here’s what emotional healing through MDMA can look like:
This is especially powerful for those who feel emotionally blocked but “can’t cry” or “don’t know what they feel.” The medicine invites. And in that softening, the nervous system can reset, and the healing can begin.
With the support of a trained guide, this process becomes a release and a reclamation of your full emotional range and humanity.
At the heart of every thriving relationship is emotional safety. But when that safety breaks down—through miscommunication, unmet needs, betrayal, or years of subtle disconnection—many couples find themselves stuck. Talking doesn’t help. Distance grows. Defences rise.
MDMA can change that.
In a supported therapeutic setting, MDMA creates a unique emotional field where both partners can lower their armour, hear each other with fresh ears, and speak from the heart—not the wound.
Couples often experience:
It’s not about going over every argument or finding who’s right. It’s about returning to what’s true: love, hurt, longing, care.
Whether you’re in crisis or simply feeling the weight of years without deep connection, MDMA-assisted couples sessions can be a reset—an invitation to begin again from a different place.
As a facilitator, I hold these sessions with reverence. We prepare carefully beforehand. We integrate the insights afterwards. The medicine opens the door, but it’s the shared courage to walk through it that creates lasting change.
Whether you’re coming alone or as a couple, every MDMA-assisted session is held with care, preparation, and intentionality.
I always work alongside my wife, Beáta Alföldi, an experienced, trauma-informed female co-guide. Together, we create a safe, balanced, and attuned space that supports deep emotional work, inner connection, and healing.
Here’s what the process generally looks like:
Before any medicine work, we meet for 3 online preparatory sessions. These sessions help us:
We also cover practical preparation: sleep, food, substances, schedule, and post-session care.
Sessions take place in a quiet, private setting. There’s a clear beginning, middle, and end:
There is no pressure to “do” or “fix” anything. The session unfolds in response to your system’s wisdom, which means you’ll only be presented with what you’re currently able to hold.
After the journey, we’ll schedule one or more integration sessions to:
This is where the transformation truly takes hold. This part is about anchoring what was revealed into the way you live, love, and lead.
This is one of the most frequently asked questions I receive, and it's an important one to answer with clarity and transparency.
As of now, MDMA is not yet legal for therapeutic use in Portugal. However, Portugal’s unique legal framework decriminalises the personal use and possession of small amounts of most substances, including MDMA. This means:
It’s worth noting that MDMA therapy is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials in several countries, including the U.S., and is expected to become legally available for prescription use in the coming years. Portugal is likely to follow this trend soon.

MDMA-assisted therapy isn’t a magic fix. But for many, it becomes a powerful catalyst for healing, clarity, and reconnection.
You might be ready if:
This work is not for everyone. If you’re currently in active addiction, a state of psychological instability, or not ready to look inward with honesty, there are likely other steps to take first.
But if you’re ready to feel, to open, to soften, to rewire, then this might be the next step on your healing path.
MDMA doesn’t do the work for you. It creates the conditions where true healing can begin: safety, empathy, insight, and connection.
And when held with skill, presence, and integration, that healing can ripple into every part of your life.
If you’ve made it this far, something in you might be stirring—a sense that it’s time to try a different kind of healing. MDMA-assisted therapy isn’t about escaping who you are. It’s about creating the conditions to finally meet yourself or your partner with clarity, compassion, and courage.
