Why Shaking Works

Shaking is a natural response to stress and tension.

Animals often shake after a stressful situation to release excess energy and reset their nervous systems.

This instinctual behaviour helps them return to a state of calm alertness.

For us, humans animals, shaking serves a similar purpose by:

  • Discharging Built-Up Stress: Releases adrenaline and cortisol from the body.
  • Resetting the Nervous System: Moves you from a fight-or-flight state to rest and digest.
  • Enhancing Mind-Body Connection: Encourages awareness of physical sensations and emotions.

How to Practice Shaking

Getting started is easy. Here's how you can incorporate shaking into your routine:

  1. Find a Comfortable Space: Choose a place where you feel safe and won't be disturbed. Stand with your feet facing forward at a hip-to-shoulder-width distance.
  2. Set an Intention: Close your eyes (if comfortable) and take a few deep breaths. Say a simple intention, such as "I release what no longer serves me" or "I invite energy and vitality."
  3. Start Gently: Begin by lightly bouncing your knees and allowing that movement to flow upward. Let your arms hang loose, and relax your shoulders.
  4. Increase the Intensity: Gradually amplify the shaking, allowing your entire body to participate. There's no right or wrong way—trust your body's wisdom.
  5. Breathe Naturally: Keep your breath flowing naturally. You might notice it synchronises with your movements.
  6. Continue for 3-5 Minutes: Shake for as long as feels good, typically between three to five minutes.
  7. Slow Down and Stop: Gradually reduce the intensity until you come to a gentle stop.
  8. Integrate the Experience: Stand, sit, or lay quietly for a few moments. Notice any sensations, emotions, or thoughts that arise.

Incorporating Shaking into Daily Life

Shaking is versatile and can be used anytime you need a reset:

  • Morning Boost: Shake in the morning to awaken your body and prepare for the day.
  • Midday Reset*: Use shaking to break up long periods of sitting, clear the mind, and recharge during a busy day.
  • Evening Wind-Down: Shake off the day's stresses to create relaxation before sleep.
  • Pre-Meditation Practice: Shaking makes it easier to settle into meditation.

*Pro Tip: Taking breaks throughout the day allows you to release the tension that builds up. This way you can stay focused for longer and come home feeling present and grounded.
